A bit of a late post but I wanted to pop it on here for myself more than anything else.
I have the best memories of buying chrysanthemums for Mother’s Day for both my mum and now for myself, and I love that I can finally grow my own for this special day!
I’m very lucky to be connected to my local growing community who grow together supporting each other with swaps of cuttings and flowers when one of us fall short for an order. I think micro business (farms, bakeries, breweries etc) can heal communities from the inside out.

Just thought I’d pop a bit of an update here to let you know that we are in the final stages of uploading new varieties to our Sweet pea seed shop on our website.
We are hoping to be ready in the next two weeks for our yearly sale, we are just waiting on the last seeds to be harvested and sent up from our amazing growers In Tassie.
You can’t get fresher seeds than that!!!

It’s been so fun growing new varieties this season, my favourites (if I could choose… ) would be Juliet and Elisabeth Shorthouse. 💖

Primrose, a pale yellow one was so sweet and a really novelty to see. Burnished Bronze has been on my personal Wishlist for as long as I can remember and it didn’t disappoint!!
Kings Ransom…. What a stunning variety!!! Gosh, this was a bitter sweet grow for me. I loved it so so much and was very aware of how many of you wanting this!! But, I had an awful time. Germination was terrible, and of the seeds that did make it didn’t set many seeds. I do know of another grower in Australia who also has this variety which is so exciting (and a massive relief to me 😬) so although it will take a bit longer to harvest enough to share, we are working on it.
It will be worth the wait. I promise.

Ever wondered what the difference is between Formby Duke and Formby Monarch? I have!! They are both new to me this year and I’ve been hanging out to see for myself.
Here they are side by side, above is Duke below is Monarch. I haven’t used a filter for correct colour reference.
They are stunning with strong stems, and better stem length than I was expecting. They have lasted over a week in a vase for me in the heat of summer and feel excited to be sending them out in a special bouquet today 💖
Has anyone else grown them? What are your thoughts?

The last couple of days has brought the rain we have been eagerly waiting for and a break from the heat.
I’m so glad that I have a chance to plant out my next batch of seedlings that have desperately been waiting for the heatwave to pass. I hope they settle in before the heat ramps up again to get that final growth spurt in before the end of summer.
I had to smile when reading an email from @transitionfarm a reminder that although we are all enjoying our harvest this time of year it’s already time to plant seeds for next season….
“You need to keep sowing!!”

The garden is in full bloom and I’m pretty stoked to see that all the compulsive seed buying I’ve been doing over the past 6 months did grow into something so absolutely beautiful! Woohoo!!!
It’s a hot and dry summer here and Im spending everyday watering morning and evening trying to keep it all alive…. I realise that I have to invest in an irrigation system and feel a bit overwhelmed at the idea.

All of the sweet pea rows are just in their final stages of opening up and it’s such a dream to walk through the sweetly fragrant rows.
I’m meeting new varieties to me for the first time and all the hard work I’ve put into this project has truly been worth every minute.
I’ve been holding my breath for Kings Ransom to open up, and at last I get the opportunity to see what the fuss is all about 😀
YES it’s is stunning. YES the colour is wildly beautiful and YES!! It Shimmers in the sunlight!
It’s a wonderful time of year full of potential and wonder.

The Dahlias are finished for another year especially after all the recent rain we have had. I always think that they are going to hang in there until Mother’s Day but they never do!
I’m so glad that Ive started to invest in some Chrysanthemums. They are so so beautiful and kinda just hang out quietly in the garden not doing anything until they explode with colour, just when everything else on the farm is tired and gives up.
I’m taking these into town tomorrow to Goodness Me Organics if you would like to have a pretty bunch of golden sunshine on your kitchen table.

I never dreamed that I would do anything like this, grow flowers to sell and to collect seeds that is, and now it’s my full time job. I am dazed with wonder and happiness.

A little story about seeds…

As most gardeners/growers know there is nothing more magical than being able to pick and choose the varieties of plants you want to grow, be able to then take a tiny seed and nurture and care for it until it becomes the very thing that you imagined. Truly, it’s so amazing!!
It seems so simple, yet so many of us garden lovers struggle with that initial start of getting the seed to germinate. So, so disheartening! I know!!
For many years I’ve done this very thing and then blamed myself, blamed the seed raising mix, blamed the weather and learned how yes, these are all important little pieces of the puzzle I’ve committed to figuring out.
I’m still learning and perfecting this vital life giving skill (more about that later).
But, the most important lesson I have learned is that you need to start with beautiful fresh seed. Don’t feel discouraged. Don’t give up! Try again, it’s so worth it.

I’m back into a familiar rhythm of summer.
Throwing random bits and pieces from the vegetable garden (mandala garden) into a quiche for dinner, popping it in the oven while I slip outside to harvest flower buckets.
